Clay is a condition, not a verdict.

Some clay holds seasonal moisture. Some dries hard. The drainage test comes first.

“Clay soil” describes particle size, but it does not tell you everything a plant experiences. Slope, compaction, organic matter, construction disturbance, and nearby roots can make two clay beds behave differently.

Test the actual planting zone

Dig a small test hole, fill it with water, let it drain, then fill it again and observe. The goal is not a perfect laboratory rate; it is to distinguish a bed that drains between rains from one that stays saturated.

Do not create a rich pocket in a dense bowl

Replacing the soil in one narrow hole with a very different mix can encourage roots to stay inside the hole and may create a water-holding interface. Break up glazed sides, plant at the correct crown level, and improve the bed as a system when improvement is needed.

Stop if water threatens a structure.A plant list is not a drainage repair. Persistent water near a foundation, active erosion, or a failing downspout needs appropriate professional assessment.

Match moisture, then add structure

For a sunny clay bed that dries between storms, consider tough clumping species such as little bluestem and butterfly weed. For medium-to-moist conditions, foxglove beardtongue, clustered mountain mint, golden ragwort, or Virginia sweetspire may be more suitable—subject to local range and mature size.

Use the first year to learn

Mulch lightly, water through establishment, and watch which parts of the bed dry first. That observation is more useful than forcing the whole space into one “clay” category.
